I create a wide range of stoneware ceramics for both functional and decorative use, including hand-built, wheel-thrown, and slip-cast pieces.
My work ranges from bowls, plates, and mugs to ornamental ceramics and occasionally the odd teapot, with every piece unique in its size, shape, and colour palette.
I particularly enjoy experimenting with layered glazes and surface decoration techniques to create distinctive textures and unexpected finishes.
I originally studied Graphic Design at London College of Printing between 1987 and 1990 and have spent much of my life exploring different art and craft practices. However, it wasn’t until I discovered ceramics at Newcastle College in 2013 that I truly found my passion. This eventually led me to complete a degree in ceramics at University of Sunderland, graduating with First Class Honours in 2024.
After years of making pottery in my spare time, I realised clay was the direction I wanted to pursue professionally. I established my own home studio, where I continue a process of experimentation and self-directed learning, exploring different clays, hand-building techniques, and surface finishes.
Today, I focus fully on my practice through Helen Sundin Ceramics, currently based in my home studio and soon relocating to a converted cottage studio in Gosforth. There, I hope to offer pottery classes and informal drop-in sessions for anyone interested in working with clay.
